Former Mexican Governor Warns Trump About Cartel-Linked Consul in Miami

A former Mexican governor has sent a series of letters to President Donald Trump, warning about the alleged cartel connections of Mexico’s new consul in Miami.

In a significant development, a former Mexican governor has taken the unusual step of warning President Donald Trump about the alleged cartel connections of Mexico’s new consul in Miami. Williams Oswaldo (Willy) Ochoa, who served as governor of Chiapas, has expressed deep concerns over the appointment of Rutilio Escandon Cadenas.

Ochoa’s letters, which have been obtained by Breitbart News Foundation, claim that Escandon’s background poses a serious threat to the safety of both Florida and Chiapas residents. According to Ochoa, during Escandon’s tenure as governor from 2018 to 2024, Chiapas became a ’lawless land’ with rampant migration and a severe humanitarian crisis.

Ochoa alleges that Escandon’s administration allowed individuals with ties to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, and Colombia’s FARC guerrillas to transit through Chiapas en route to the United States. He further claims that Escandon’s favoritism towards criminal organizations exacerbated the violence, leading to the displacement of over 15,000 individuals.

Escandon is a member of Mexico’s MORENA Party, the same party as President Claudia Sheinbaum and her predecessor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. This warning comes at a time when Mexico faces potential tariffs from the Trump administration due to its failure to curb drug cartels and human smuggling.

Earlier this year, the Trump White House accused Mexico’s government of colluding with cartels, a situation that led to the threat of a 25 percent tariff. The measure was temporarily delayed after Sheinbaum promised to deploy 10,000 National Guardsmen to the border.

This latest revelation underscores the ongoing challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border and the need for vigilant oversight of diplomatic appointments, especially those with potential ties to criminal organizations.
