Trump and Putin Agree to Initiate Talks to End Ukraine Conflict
President Donald Trump announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to start negotiations immediately to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a social media post, President Trump detailed a lengthy phone call with Putin, where both leaders committed to working closely together to bring the conflict to a swift conclusion. They also discussed the possibility of meeting in person, potentially in each other’s countries.
This development marks a significant step towards peace in the region, reflecting President Trump’s dedication to resolving international conflicts. While it remains unclear how closely Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be involved, Trump did hold a phone call with him, described as ‘good’ by a Ukrainian presidential adviser.
Trump’s approach departs from the Biden administration’s policy of ’nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,’ indicating a more direct and proactive engagement with Russia. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Trump’s special Russia-Ukraine envoy, retired Gen. Keith Kellogg, will represent the U.S. at the upcoming Munich Security Conference, where Zelenskyy is also expected to attend.
The war in Ukraine, which began three years ago, has been a focal point of international tension. President Trump’s initiative to engage directly with Putin underscores his commitment to ending the conflict and restoring stability in the region, reflecting his broader goal of fostering peace and security worldwide.
