Trump Engages Putin in High-Stakes Call to End Ukraine War

Former President Donald Trump is currently in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In a significant diplomatic move, former President Donald Trump has initiated a high-stakes phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. The conversation, which started at 10 a.m. ET, was reported to be ongoing by White House spokesman Dan Scavino, who provided updates at 10:54 a.m. and 11:32 a.m. ET, indicating the seriousness of the dialogue.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform prior to the call, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. He highlighted the tragic toll of the conflict, stating that ‘Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW.’ This call follows Trump’s recent assertion that ‘Many elements of a Final Agreement have been agreed to, but much remains,’ suggesting that some progress has been made, though significant hurdles persist.

The Kremlin has confirmed that the leaders would discuss the situation in Ukraine, alongside other issues concerning U.S.-Russia relations. Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, noted that there are a ’large number of questions’ to address, pointing to the complexity of the negotiations.

On the U.S. side, the State Department has put forward a ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has accepted, shifting the onus onto Russia. The proposal, which was finalized during talks in Saudi Arabia, includes a 30-day ceasefire and the resumption of U.S. military aid and intelligence support to Ukraine. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated, ‘The ball is now in Russia’s court,’ underscoring the U.S. position in these negotiations.

This latest diplomatic effort comes at a time when Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made significant changes within his military leadership, possibly in preparation for the outcomes of the Trump-Putin discussions. The last interaction between Trump and Putin was in mid-February, where they discussed a range of topics from Ukraine to global economic issues, highlighting the broad scope of their ongoing dialogue.

As this situation develops, the world watches closely, hoping for a breakthrough that could bring an end to the devastating conflict in Ukraine.
