Trump DOJ Clashes with Judge Over Deportation Flights

The Trump administration’s Department of Justice has accused a federal judge of ‘digressive micromanagement’ in a case involving deportation flights to El Salvador.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) under former President Donald Trump has escalated its criticism of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, following a legal battle over deportation flights that transported Venezuelan nationals to El Salvador. The DOJ claims that the judge’s focus on minute details such as flight schedules and international relations has distracted from the core legal issues at hand.

Judge Boasberg issued an emergency order last Saturday, temporarily halting these deportation flights for 14 days to review the legality of using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport individuals, some of whom were alleged members of the violent gang Tren de Aragua. Despite the order, two flights carrying over 200 migrants had already departed, prompting further contention between the judicial and executive branches.

In response, the DOJ filed a document co-signed by high-ranking officials including Attorney General Pamela Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, arguing that the court’s demands for specific flight details were an overreach. They emphasized that such inquiries were not only time-consuming but also irrelevant to the legal merits of the case. The DOJ also hinted at potentially invoking the state secrets privilege to protect sensitive information related to national security and foreign affairs.

The controversy has drawn significant attention, with the Trump administration calling for Judge Boasberg’s impeachment. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that a plane with hundreds of migrants, including more than 130 removed under the Alien Enemies Act, had left U.S. airspace before the judge’s order could take effect.

This ongoing legal battle underscores the tensions between the judiciary and the executive branch, highlighting differing views on the authority and the management of deportation policies.
