House DOGE Subcommittee Probes U.S. Agency for Global Media Amid Allegations of Corruption

House DOGE Subcommittee Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is leading an investigation into the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) over allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), chairwoman of the House DOGE subcommittee, has launched a thorough investigation into what she describes as ‘gross negligence’ and ‘rampant cronyism’ at the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). This government-funded international media agency, responsible for outlets like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, has come under scrutiny for serious allegations that pose a ‘direct threat to national security,’ according to Greene.

The agency, founded in 1999 and primarily staffed by former mainstream media journalists, including executives from MSNBC and NPR, has been accused of severe mismanagement and corruption. A 2020 investigation by the independent law firm McGuireWoods confirmed whistleblower testimonies, revealing issues such as the unlawful granting of J-1 visas and awarding millions in contracts through the Open Technology Fund to individuals with conflicts of interest.

Further allegations include senior officials erasing laptop hard drives before turning them over to investigators. Despite the initial firing of those involved under the Trump administration, nearly all were rehired under the Biden administration, allowing them to continue their activities without repercussions, Greene stated.

Kari Lake, the Trump administration’s senior advisor overseeing USAGM, has described the agency as ’not salvageable’ and a ‘giant rot’ that burdens American taxpayers and poses a national security risk. Following these criticisms, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to dismantle USAGM and six other government offices as part of efforts to reduce federal bureaucracy.

Before the agency’s complete shutdown, Greene is requesting access to key records from Kari Lake to further illuminate the allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and national security failures. She emphasized the need to hold those involved accountable and prevent the covering up of illegal activities.

The investigation into USAGM highlights ongoing concerns about the integrity and efficiency of government-funded agencies and their impact on national security.
