Elon Musk's DOGE Department Targets IRS Inefficiencies

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is spearheading efforts to streamline the IRS, tackling a modernization project that’s decades overdue and billions over budget.

In a recent appearance on ‘The Ingraham Angle,’ DOGE representative Sam Corcos, alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, discussed the Trump administration’s aggressive push to eliminate wasteful spending within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The DOGE, led by Elon Musk, is focusing on a modernization program that Corcos described as “30 years behind schedule and $15 billion over budget.” This initiative is part of a broader effort to dismantle government bureaucracy and enhance efficiency across federal agencies.

Corcos highlighted the significant challenges the IRS faces, particularly in transitioning from outdated infrastructure to modern systems. “We’re now 35 years into this program…it was supposed to be delivered in 1996, and it’s still five years away,” he noted, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The DOGE’s efforts are not just about modernization but also about reducing the heavy reliance on costly contractors, which currently consume around 80% of the IRS’s $3.5 billion operations and maintenance budget.

Treasury Secretary Bessent echoed Corcos’s concerns, pointing out the influence of entrenched interests that he likened to a “boa constrictor” constricting government operations. “They’ve constricted themselves around our government, and the costs are unbelievable,” Bessent stated, underscoring the need for reform to benefit the American taxpayer.

Despite the commendable goals of the DOGE, their actions have faced opposition from Democrats and other groups. Bessent addressed this resistance, arguing that the push for efficiency should be universally supported. “Sam and his crew are making it more efficient to work for the American people,” he said, advocating for a system that is “better, cheaper, faster, and with more privacy.”

As the DOGE continues its mission under Elon Musk’s leadership, the focus remains on reforming key federal agencies like the IRS to ensure they serve the public more effectively and economically.
