Florida Returns Nearly $878M to Federal Government After DeSantis-Musk Meeting

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the return of over $878 million in federal funds following a meeting with Elon Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

In a significant move, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared that the state successfully returned $878,112,000 to the federal government, funds it had been attempting to return for several years. This action was taken after a meeting with billionaire Elon Musk and his team at the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

DeSantis took to X to share the news, stating, “For years, Florida has been trying to return federal funds to the federal government due to the ideological strings attached by the Biden Administration—but they couldn’t even figure out how to accept it.” He further emphasized the efficiency of the meeting with Musk, saying, “Today, I met with @elonmusk and the DOGE team, and we got this done in the same day.”

The governor’s office communicated the decision to the U.S. Treasury Department, indicating that Florida would continue to search for additional excess federal funds to return. “At the direction of Governor DeSantis and following his meeting with Elon Musk today, the State of Florida is formally returning $878,112,000 in taxpayer dollars to the federal government as part of DOGE’s efforts,” the email stated. It added, “We will also continue to identify other unused or surplus federal funding granted to Florida and determine if further refunds can be made. We hope our actions serve as a model for other states to follow.”

Elon Musk, who also serves as a senior advisor to President Donald Trump, responded to the announcement on X, stating, “Almost a billion dollars of your taxpayer money saved.”

DeSantis launched Florida’s DOGE task force last month to enhance efficiency within the state government, aiming to save taxpayers money and ensure accountability. The governor expressed confidence in the task force’s ability to set new standards for fiscal responsibility, stating, “Florida has set the standard for fiscally conservative governance, and our new Florida DOGE task force will do even more to serve the people of Florida.”

This move by Florida, spurred by the collaboration between DeSantis and Musk, underscores a broader push towards government efficiency and fiscal conservatism, with the state leading by example in returning unneeded federal funds.
