Greenland PM Slams Usha Vance's Visit as 'Very Aggressive'
Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has strongly criticized the upcoming visit of U.S. Second Lady Usha Vance, labeling it as a ‘very aggressive’ provocation.
In a recent interview with Greenlandic news outlet Sermitsiaq, Prime Minister Múte Egede expressed his concerns over the planned visit of U.S. Second Lady Usha Vance to Greenland. Egede described the visit, which includes Vance’s son and a U.S. delegation, as a dangerous move and a clear demonstration of power by the United States. The White House announced that Vance’s itinerary includes visiting historical sites, exploring the country’s heritage, and attending Greenland’s national dogsled race. However, Egede questioned the inclusion of Michael Waltz, Trump’s national security advisor, in the delegation, suggesting that his presence signifies more than a simple diplomatic visit.
Egede’s remarks come in the wake of President Donald Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in acquiring Greenland for national security reasons. Trump’s comments have been met with resistance from Greenland, with the country’s government previously calling Trump’s acquisition talks ‘unacceptable.’ The political landscape in Greenland has also recently shifted, with Egede’s left-wing party losing to the center-right Demokraatit party, which advocates for independence from Denmark, Greenland’s current governing authority.
The new ruling party’s leader has openly criticized Trump, labeling him as a ’threat to our political independence.’ Amid these tensions, Egede has called upon Greenland’s allies to vocally support the country against what he perceives as U.S. encroachment. He warned that without clear support, American aggression could escalate, further threatening Greenland’s sovereignty.
As Vance’s visit approaches, Danish police have reportedly increased security measures, a standard procedure for high-level diplomatic visits. The White House and the Second Lady have not yet responded to requests for comment on Egede’s statements.
This unfolding situation underscores the delicate balance of international relations and the sensitivities surrounding territorial sovereignty, especially in regions with strategic significance like Greenland.
