Elon Musk Joins White House Probe into Signal Chat Leak

Elon Musk is helping lead the investigation into a Signal chat leak involving top national security officials, the White House announced.

Elon Musk is assisting in leading an investigation into a Signal chat leak that included key national security figures and Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on March 26, 2025. The investigation, which also involves the National Security Council and the White House Counsel’s Office, aims to determine how Goldberg was inadvertently added to a group chat that included National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

Leavitt emphasized Musk’s role, stating, “Elon Musk has offered to put his technical experts on this, to figure out how this number was inadvertently added to the chat – again, to take responsibility and ensure this can never happen again.” The involvement of Musk’s team was highlighted as crucial in understanding the technical aspects of the breach.

The incident came to light after Goldberg published an article claiming to reveal ‘war plans’ discussed in the chat, which the Trump administration has vehemently denied, labeling the article as a ‘hoax’. In a follow-up piece, The Atlantic adjusted its rhetoric from ‘war plans’ to ‘attack plans’, though the administration insists that no classified information was shared.

National Security Advisor Mike Waltz admitted to accidentally adding Goldberg to the chat, mistaking him for someone else, and has since taken responsibility. President Trump suggested that a staffer in Waltz’s office may have been responsible for the error.

The use of Signal, an encrypted messaging app favored for its security features, has been defended by the White House as an approved communication tool for government employees. Leavitt noted, “The CIA has it loaded onto government phones because it is the most secure and efficient way to communicate.”

As the investigation continues, the involvement of Elon Musk and his team of technical experts is seen as a pivotal move to not only address this specific incident but also to enhance the security of government communications moving forward.
