Senate Confirms Dr. Marty Makary as FDA Commissioner Under Trump

The Senate confirmed Dr. Marty Makary as the new head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday, marking a significant move in President Donald Trump’s administration.

Dr. Marty Makary, a Johns Hopkins School of Medicine professor and former Fox News medical contributor, was confirmed by the Senate with a vote of 56-44 after passing a procedural test vote earlier in the day. His confirmation comes at a pivotal time as the nation continues to navigate health and safety issues, including vaccine policies and food safety regulations.

During his Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) hearing earlier this month, Makary addressed a variety of crucial topics, including vaccines, chronic illnesses, and food safety. A notable moment during the hearing involved his response to Senator Patty Murray’s question about rescheduling a postponed FDA Vaccine Advisory Committee meeting. Makary suggested a reevaluation of which topics necessitate advisory committee meetings and which do not, and pointed out the Biden administration’s previous decision to bypass such meetings when authorizing a COVID-19 booster shot for adults in 2021.

Makary has been vocal about the need for reform within the FDA, having written in 2021 about the necessity for ‘fresh leadership’ to foster scientific advancement rather than hinder it. At his confirmation hearing, he emphasized the opportunity to address significant public health issues such as childhood obesity and early-onset Alzheimer’s through improved food policies.

As he steps into his new role, Makary’s appointment is seen as a step toward realizing President Trump’s vision for health policy, focusing on promoting healthier lifestyles and advancing medical science. His confirmation is expected to bring changes to the FDA’s approach to public health challenges in the coming years.
