Judge Orders Preservation of Trump Administration's Signal Messages

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has mandated the preservation of Signal messages from a controversial group chat involving Trump administration officials.

In a significant judicial move, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has ordered the Trump administration to preserve all Signal messages from a group chat that inadvertently included Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg. This order comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the transparency group American Oversight, which questions whether senior Cabinet officials breached federal recordkeeping laws by using the encrypted messaging app Signal to deliberate military actions against the Houthis in Yemen.

The chat gained notoriety when it was revealed that top U.S. officials had mistakenly included Goldberg in their discussions, leading to public scrutiny over the use of private messaging apps for official government business. Judge Boasberg, during a hearing, specified that the government must keep all Signal communications from March 11 to March 15, the period when the Yemen military action was discussed.

This ruling adds to the ongoing tensions between Judge Boasberg and the Trump administration. Previously, Boasberg issued a restraining order that temporarily halted President Trump’s attempt to use the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan nationals. Amid accusations from President Trump that Boasberg was selectively taking ‘Trump Cases’, the judge clarified that his assignment to the case was through a random docket system, emphasizing the impartiality of the judicial process.

Further complicating matters, the Trump administration has been criticized for not complying with court requests concerning deportation flights, which involved sending migrants back to El Salvador. The administration’s use of the state secrets privilege in this ongoing legal battle has raised questions about transparency and national security.

As the Trump administration plans to appeal a recent appellate court decision upholding Boasberg’s ruling on the deportation flights, the preservation of these Signal messages could play a crucial role in upcoming legal proceedings, potentially shedding light on the administration’s use of private communication channels for official deliberations.
