Vice President JD Vance to Visit Greenland Amid Trump's Push for Acquisition

Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance are set to visit Greenland, amid President Donald Trump’s renewed calls for the U.S. to acquire the island for strategic reasons.

Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha Vance, will travel to Greenland this week, a trip that coincides with President Donald Trump’s recent statements emphasizing the strategic importance of the island to U.S. national security. Trump has been vocal about the need for the U.S. to take over Greenland, stating in an interview with radio host Vince Coglianese that the island is crucial for both defensive and offensive military postures. “We need it. We have to have it,” Trump asserted, highlighting the busy maritime traffic along Greenland’s shores.

The visit to Greenland by the Vice President and Second Lady will include a stop at the Pituffik Space Base, the northernmost installation of the U.S. Defense Department. Originally known as Thule Air Base, this facility plays a critical role in U.S. space operations. The visit to the base replaces a previously planned trip by Usha Vance to the Avannaata Qimussersu dogsled race in Sisimiut.

Trump’s comments come at a time when he is attempting to convince the people of Greenland of the benefits of becoming U.S. citizens, despite uncertainties about their willingness. The President’s push for Greenland is not new; he has long argued that the island is essential for defending a large section of the Earth, not just the U.S. He remains optimistic about the possibility of acquisition, stating, “I think we will have it.”

The strategic importance of Greenland has historical roots, with the U.S. establishing multiple military bases there during World War II to protect the North Atlantic from Nazi threats. During the Cold War, further resources were committed to defend against potential Soviet missile attacks. However, Trump criticized past U.S. administrations and Danish leaders for neglecting Greenland, which he believes has allowed adversaries to advance their interests in the Arctic region.

The upcoming visit by Vice President Vance and the continued advocacy by President Trump underscore the ongoing U.S. interest in Greenland, reflecting broader geopolitical strategies in the Arctic.
