RFK Jr. Challenges West Virginia Governor to Slim Down Amid Health Initiatives

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has launched a bold initiative to combat obesity in West Virginia, targeting both the state’s residents and its governor.

In a striking move to address the obesity crisis in West Virginia, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a series of health initiatives during a joint event with Governor Patrick Morrisey on Friday. The event, held in Martinsburg, W. Va., not only introduced a ban on certain food dyes but also highlighted a significant change to the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), aiming to prohibit the purchase of soda with SNAP benefits.

Governor Morrisey proudly endorsed the changes, stating that his state is “putting ‘nutrition’ back into the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.” Kennedy echoed the sentiment, urging other governors to follow West Virginia’s lead and eliminate soda from SNAP benefits, emphasizing the need to stop taxpayer-funded soda subsidies for lower-income children.

However, Kennedy’s approach went beyond policy changes; he personally challenged Governor Morrisey to lose weight. During their joint appearance, Kennedy humorously remarked on the governor’s size, stating, “The first time I saw him, I said, ‘You look like you ate Governor Morrisey,’” and proposed putting Morrisey on a strict carnivore diet and exercise regimen.

Kennedy’s challenge included a public weigh-in every month for Morrisey, with a promise to return to West Virginia for a celebration if the governor loses 30 pounds. This personal challenge underscores Kennedy’s broader mission to make America healthy again, starting with the nation’s most obese state.

West Virginia’s obesity rate, which stands at 41.2% according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is the highest in the country. Kennedy’s initiatives and personal challenge to Governor Morrisey represent a comprehensive approach to tackling this pressing public health issue.
