Canadian Travel Boycott: Trump's Policies Spark Outrage

Some Canadians are canceling their trips to the U.S. in response to President Trump’s policies and critical remarks about their country.

In a growing wave of discontent, Canadians are expressing their frustration with President Donald Trump’s administration by canceling their travel plans to the United States. The decision comes in the wake of Trump’s recent comments labeling Canada as ‘one of the nastiest countries to deal with’ and his criticism of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he mistakenly referred to as ‘Gov. Trudeau’ during an appearance on ‘The Ingraham Angle.’

Natalie Huson, a resident of Vancouver, told the Daily Mail that she will not be traveling to the U.S. for at least the next four years, citing her distaste for Trump’s personality and his immigration policies. “I definitely will not be traveling to the United States for the next four years, if not longer, depending on who’s in after this Trump buffoon,” Huson stated. She expressed concerns about Trump’s ‘MAGA cult’ and his treatment of immigrants, as well as fears that increased border security measures might prevent her from returning home.

Another Canadian, Mary from Alberta, echoed Huson’s sentiments, vowing not to vacation in the U.S. as long as Trump remains in office. She mentioned that her family and friends are following suit, driven by their strong disapproval of the president’s global conduct.

The backlash extends beyond individual decisions, with social media platforms seeing an outpouring of support for the boycott. One self-identified Canadian posted on X, “Canadian here - we’re choosing to not travel to the US given how s—y your country is treating us as well as your Gestapo going around and detaining people, including a Canadian recently. Hope your country suffers economically, I have no sympathy for y’all.”

The U.S. Travel Association has warned that new tariffs on Canada could negatively impact the U.S. travel industry. These tariffs, announced by Trump in February, include a 25% levy on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on imports from China, aimed at addressing the illegal fentanyl trade.

Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also weighed in on the strained relations, stating that the ‘old relationship’ with the U.S. is ‘over.’ Carney, who won the Liberal leadership with 86% of the vote, spoke with Trump and announced plans to implement retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and the economy in response to additional U.S. trade actions scheduled for April 2, 2025.

As tensions between the two nations continue to escalate, the impact of these travel boycotts and retaliatory measures remains to be seen, but it is clear that Trump’s policies and rhetoric are driving a significant wedge between the U.S. and its northern neighbor.
