Elon Musk and 'Billboard Chris' Sue Australian Authorities Over Censored X Post

Elon Musk and Canadian activist Chris Elston, known as ‘Billboard Chris,’ are challenging the Australian government’s decision to censor a tweet on the social media platform X.

In a significant case for global free speech, Elon Musk and Chris Elston, a Canadian known for his public advocacy against gender surgeries for children, are taking legal action against the Australian government. The controversy centers around a tweet by Elston that was geo-blocked in Australia following a complaint by transgender activist Teddy Cook, who was appointed to a World Health Organization board.

The tweet in question was a share of a U.K. Daily Mail article titled ‘Kinky secrets of UN trans expert revealed,’ which led to Cook filing a complaint with Australia’s eSafety Commissioner. This resulted in a formal order for X to censor the post, which initially resisted but eventually complied. Elston, backed by Alliance Defending Freedom International (ADFI), is challenging this decision in Australia’s Administrative Review Tribunal.

Lois McLatchie Miller from ADFI emphasized the case’s importance, calling it a ‘monumental’ case for global free speech and highlighting the implications of an Australian authority censoring the speech of a Canadian on an American platform. She pointed out the broader issue of foreign governments imposing their policies on global citizens’ rights.

Elston’s activism has not been without personal cost; recently, he was fined and removed from a public sidewalk in Australia for engaging with the public about his views on puberty blockers for children. The case has drawn comparisons to concerns raised by U.S. Vice President JD Vance about global censorship affecting American technology companies and citizens.

ADFI’s advocacy director, Robert Clarke, condemned the Australian decision as a ‘patronizing affront to the principles of democracy,’ arguing that it prevents Australian citizens from accessing and evaluating information on gender ideology. Meanwhile, X is also challenging a separate penalty imposed by Australia in 2023 related to platform safety.

The legal battle continues as both Musk and Elston fight for the right to free expression, challenging what they see as overreaching censorship by Australian authorities.
