Elon Musk's $2 Million Giveaway in Wisconsin Court Race Sparks Legal Battle

Wisconsin’s Attorney General has filed an urgent appeal to the state Supreme Court to block Elon Musk from distributing $2 million to voters at a rally for Supreme Court candidate Brad Schimel.

In a dramatic turn of events in Wisconsin’s high-stakes Supreme Court race, Attorney General Joshua Kaul has escalated his efforts to prevent billionaire Elon Musk from influencing the election. Kaul’s last-minute appeal to the state Supreme Court comes after an appellate court rejected his initial request for an emergency injunction against Musk’s planned $2 million giveaway at a rally for Republican candidate Brad Schimel in Green Bay.

Musk, who has publicly supported Schimel and contributed millions to his campaign, intended to distribute $1 million checks to two individuals at the rally. Kaul argues that this action violates Wisconsin Statute § 12.11, which prohibits offering anything of value in exchange for voting or refraining from voting. The urgency of Kaul’s request stems from the imminent nature of the planned event, set for Sunday evening.

The race between Schimel, a former state attorney general and current Waukesha judge, and liberal jurist Susan Crawford, has captured national attention due to its potential impact on issues like redistricting, unions, and transgender rights. The outcome of this officially nonpartisan race could shift the balance of the court, currently holding a 4-3 liberal majority.

Musk’s involvement has drawn criticism from various quarters. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed deep concern over similar actions by Musk during the 2024 presidential election campaign. Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler accused Musk of attempting to cover up evidence of his alleged crime by deleting a prior social media post.

As the race heads to a crucial vote on Tuesday, the legal battle over Musk’s giveaway adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious election. The decision of the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Kaul’s appeal could have significant implications not only for the immediate race but also for the broader political landscape.
