Hegseth Unveils US Military Command Upgrades in Japan to Counter Chinese Aggression

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced a significant upgrade to the U.S. military command in Japan, aiming to strengthen deterrence against Chinese military aggression.

In a strategic move to bolster security in the Indo-Pacific region, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth revealed plans to enhance the U.S. military command structure in Japan during his visit to Tokyo on Sunday. Speaking alongside Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, Hegseth emphasized Japan’s critical role as an ‘indispensable partner’ in countering ‘communist Chinese military aggression,’ particularly concerning tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

Hegseth highlighted the shared ‘warrior ethos’ between the U.S. and Japanese forces, underscoring Japan’s importance as a ‘cornerstone of peace and security in the Indo-Pacific.’ This announcement follows last year’s initiative by the Biden administration, which aimed to deepen military coordination with Japan in response to the growing strategic challenge posed by China.

The planned upgrades include the appointment of a combined operational commander in Japan, aligning with Japan’s recent establishment of a joint operations command. This move is part of a broader strategy to reinforce the U.S.-Japan alliance’s military capabilities and readiness.

During the visit, Hegseth and Nakatani also discussed accelerating joint production of advanced weaponry, including beyond-visual-range AMRAAM missiles and potentially SM-6 surface-to-air defense missiles, to address munitions shortages.

Hegseth’s visit to Japan was part of his first official trip to Asia, which also included a stop in the Philippines and a memorial service on Iwo Jima, marking the 80th anniversary of the historic battle between U.S. and Japanese forces.

The upgrades come at a time when Japan is increasing its military spending and seeking to expand its operational capabilities, despite constitutional limitations on its military actions. With 50,000 U.S. troops stationed in Japan, including squadrons of fighter jets and an aircraft carrier strike group, the U.S. maintains a significant military presence aimed at containing Chinese influence in the region.
