Trump Threatens Tariffs on Russian Oil Amid Ukraine Conflict

President Donald Trump expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, threatening significant tariffs on Russian oil if peace efforts fail.

In a recent interview with NBC News, President Donald Trump voiced his irritation with Russian President Vladimir Putin for criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and for not advancing towards a peace agreement with Ukraine. Trump stated that he was ‘pissed off’ at Putin’s recent actions, which included disparaging Zelenskyy’s leadership and suggesting the need for a trans-national government in Ukraine.

Trump warned that if Russia does not cooperate in stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if he believes Russia is at fault, he would impose secondary tariffs on all oil imports from Russia. He specified that these tariffs could range from 25% to 50% and would effectively bar any business that buys Russian oil from operating in the United States.

The tension between the two leaders comes amidst continued Russian military aggression in Ukraine. Over the weekend, Russian forces launched multiple attacks, including drone strikes in Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih, resulting in several casualties and injuries. Putin has publicly praised the strategic initiatives of his forces, claiming they are liberating territories daily.

In response to the escalating conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the U.S. to pressure Moscow to curb its aggression. Zelenskyy recently met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to discuss strengthening Kyiv’s military position and to explore proposals for deploying European troops in Ukraine as part of any peace deal.

Trump is scheduled to speak with Putin this Tuesday to discuss a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Despite his current frustration, Trump indicated that his anger would ‘dissipate quickly’ if Putin takes steps towards peace.
