Vance's Greenland Critique Prompts Danish Rebuke
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has criticized the Trump administration’s tone regarding Greenland, following comments made by Vice President JD Vance.
In a direct response to Vice President JD Vance’s recent visit to Greenland, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressed his disapproval of the Trump administration’s approach towards Denmark and its autonomous territory, Greenland. Rasmussen, in a video statement, emphasized that the manner in which the criticism was delivered was inappropriate for discussions between close allies like Denmark and the United States.
During his visit to the U.S. military’s Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, Vice President Vance accused Denmark of failing to adequately protect Greenland from Russian and Chinese influences. He stated, “Denmark hasn’t done a good job at keeping Greenland safe,” and further criticized Denmark for underinvesting in both the security and the welfare of Greenland’s residents.
Rasmussen countered these claims by highlighting Denmark’s commitment to Arctic security, mentioning a recent billion-dollar investment in drones, ships, and personnel to enhance the region’s defense capabilities. He acknowledged the need for a stronger U.S. military presence in Greenland but stressed that this should be achieved collaboratively under the existing defense agreement established in 1951.
The Danish Foreign Minister also pointed out that both Denmark and the U.S. have historically benefited from a peaceful Arctic, but the changing geopolitical landscape requires a more active approach. He welcomed NATO allies to increase their involvement in the Arctic, while reaffirming Denmark’s readiness to take on its responsibilities in the region.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Denmark concerning Greenland, with the Trump administration previously expressing interest in acquiring the territory. As both nations navigate these complex diplomatic waters, Rasmussen’s response underscores the importance of maintaining respectful dialogue among allies.
