Trump Signs Executive Order to Combat Ticket Scalping

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at protecting Americans from exploitative practices in the concert and entertainment industry.

In a move to address the growing issue of ticket scalping, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that directs the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to collaborate with the Attorney General to enforce competition laws within the concert and entertainment sector. The order also emphasizes the enforcement of the Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act, encouraging state consumer protection authorities to take action.

The executive order mandates price transparency throughout the ticket purchasing process, including in the secondary ticketing market. It also tasks the Attorney General and the Treasury Secretary with ensuring that ticket scalpers comply fully with the Internal Revenue Code and other relevant laws. Within 180 days, the Treasury Department, the Department of Justice, and the FTC are required to submit a report detailing the measures taken to combat unfair practices in the industry and to suggest further regulations or legislation to enhance consumer protection.

President Trump, who has spoken out against high ticket prices during his campaign, described the current system as “very unfortunate” for fans who are often priced out. A White House official emphasized the president’s commitment to making arts and entertainment more accessible, noting that the industry supports 913,000 jobs and has a significant economic impact of $132.6 billion nationwide.

The official criticized the practices of ticket scalpers who use bots to buy large quantities of tickets at face value and then resell them at significantly inflated prices. Reports indicate that fans have sometimes paid up to 70 times the original ticket price. The official highlighted that such practices benefit only the scalpers and ticketing agencies, with no additional profit going to the artists.

This executive order marks a significant step in the administration’s efforts to protect consumers and ensure fairness in the live concert and entertainment industry.
