Maine's Transgender Athlete Policy Sparks Federal Scrutiny and Local Debate

Senator Susan Collins of Maine has publicly opposed a state law allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ and women’s sports, citing a conflict with Title IX.

Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, has taken a firm stance against a Maine state law that permits transgender athletes to participate in girls’ and women’s sports, arguing that it contradicts the spirit of Title IX. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Collins expressed her belief that the law undermines the fairness and safety intended by the federal legislation passed in 1972 to ensure equal athletic opportunities for women and girls.

The controversy escalated when Maine refused to comply with an executive order from then-President Donald Trump, which aimed to prevent biological males from competing in female sports categories. This refusal led to the state being referred to the Justice Department by the Health and Human Services Department’s Office of Civil Rights for noncompliance with Title IX.

Collins emphasized the importance of treating transgender individuals with respect and dignity but maintained that the essence of Title IX is to provide safe and fair athletic competition for women. She vowed to continue advocating for Maine to receive its fair share of federal funding while supporting the original intent of Title IX.

Maine school officials, however, defended their stance by citing the Maine Human Rights Act (MHRA), which they are bound to follow. The Maine Principals’ Association and Maine School Administrative District 51 both highlighted their commitment to a safe and ethical learning environment that respects and supports all students, including transgender athletes.

The debate has stirred public opinion in Maine, with a recent University of New Hampshire poll indicating that 64% of residents believe transgender athletes should not participate in girls’ and women’s sports. Only 29% supported their participation.

As the issue continues to unfold, Maine Governor Janet Mills, Attorney General Aaron Frey, and the state’s Education Department have yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.
