Washington School Officials Challenge State's Defiance of Trump's Transgender Sports Order

Kennewick School Board officials are pushing back against Washington State’s refusal to comply with President Trump’s executive order on transgender athletes in girls’ sports.

In a bold stand against the state’s education policies, Kennewick School Board President Gabe Galbraith and Vice President Micah Valentine have criticized Washington State’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal, for defying President Trump’s executive order aimed at keeping transgender athletes out of girls’ sports. The controversy stems from Trump’s ‘Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports’ directive, which has sparked significant debate across the nation.

Valentine expressed strong disapproval during a recent appearance on ‘Fox & Friends First,’ labeling the state’s stance as ‘an absolute joke.’ He accused Reykdal of pushing a ‘radical leftist ideology’ and pointed out declining academic performance under Reykdal’s leadership, suggesting a focus on issues like the promotion of LGBTQIA+ rights at the expense of educational quality.

In response to the state’s position, the Kennewick School Board has escalated the matter by filing a Title IX complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. Their action seeks federal intervention to enforce compliance with Trump’s order, highlighting concerns over fairness and safety in girls’ sports.

Reykdal, however, remains firm in his stance, defending the rights of transgender students to participate in sports according to their gender identity. He emphasized the scientific understanding of gender as more of a continuum than a binary concept and underscored the state’s commitment to its civil rights obligations and state laws that support transgender participation in sports.

The discord between federal and state directives places districts like Kennewick in a challenging position, not only in terms of policy adherence but also regarding potential risks to federal funding. Galbraith emphasized the need for federal intervention to resolve the conflict and ensure adherence to Trump’s executive order.

Reykdal, in defending his position, argued that Trump’s executive order does not have the force of law and cannot override state legislation. He affirmed that his office would continue to enforce Washington’s laws, which prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, until any changes are made by Congress or federal courts.

This ongoing dispute underscores the broader national debate over transgender rights in sports, with significant implications for educational policy and student welfare.
