Moderate Democrat Backs Trump's 10% Tariff Plan, Signals Bipartisan Support

Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, has expressed cautious optimism about President Donald Trump’s proposed 10% blanket tariff on U.S. imports, marking a rare instance of bipartisan support for the policy.

In a surprising turn of events, Representative Jared Golden of Maine, a Democrat, has publicly supported President Donald Trump’s recently announced 10% universal tariff on imports. This stance contrasts sharply with the majority of his party, which has largely criticized the tariff plan. Golden, who proposed a similar tariff earlier in the year through his BUILT USA Act, stated that he was ‘pleased’ with Trump’s policy direction and is eager to collaborate on making it a federal law.

Golden emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to trade, suggesting that tariffs should be part of a broader strategy to revitalize American manufacturing and support working families. He stressed the importance of pairing tariffs with policies that bolster unions, apprenticeships, reduce regulatory burdens, and promote domestic energy production. While he acknowledged the introduction of additional tariff policies by Trump, Golden indicated that he would need time to review these in detail.

Despite the generally negative reaction from Democrats, Golden’s stance hints at potential bipartisan support for Trump’s tariff agenda. He expressed willingness to work with Trump to codify the 10% tariff into law, suggesting that with enough Republican support and a few like-minded Democrats, such legislation could be feasible.

However, not all Democrats share Golden’s optimism. Representatives like Debbie Dingell and Gregory Meeks have voiced concerns over the implementation and justification of the tariffs, with Meeks planning to force a vote to end the national emergency Trump cited to enact the tariffs.

Trump’s tariff plan, which includes a 10% blanket tariff on all imports and up to 50% on specific countries, aims to address trade imbalances and boost American industry. As the debate continues, Golden’s support could be a pivotal factor in shaping the future of U.S. trade policy.
