Russia Denounces Trump's Threats to Bomb Iran as 'Illegal and Unacceptable'
Russia has strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s recent threats to bomb Iran, labeling them as ‘illegal and unacceptable’ amid escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.
In a recent statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry, through spokesperson Maria Zakharova, condemned President Donald Trump’s threats to use military force against Iran. Trump had warned of potential bombings if Iran did not cease arming the Houthi terrorist group and halt its nuclear program. Zakharova emphasized that such threats are not only against international law but could lead to a global catastrophe if acted upon.
The backdrop to these tensions includes Trump’s unsuccessful attempt to restart negotiations with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei through a letter, which was rejected. Trump’s administration has been vocal about imposing secondary tariffs or sanctions on countries engaging in business with Iran, a move that could further isolate the Islamic Republic economically.
Despite the public stance of solidarity with Iran, experts like Rebekah Koffler, a former DIA intelligence officer, suggest that Russia’s relationship with Iran is complex and fraught with distrust. Koffler noted that while Russia publicly supports Iran, it is wary of Iran developing a fully operational nuclear capability. She also mentioned that Russia has previously aligned with the U.S. in imposing economic sanctions on Iran during the Obama administration.
The situation remains tense as Iran continues to enrich uranium to levels just below those needed for nuclear weapons, with reports indicating that it could produce a nuclear weapon within weeks if it chose to do so. The international community watches closely as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a resolution to the ongoing nuclear standoff.
