Fact-Checking in Crisis: Meta's Decision and Political Pressures

The fact-checking community is facing unprecedented challenges following Meta’s decision to end its fact-checking system and political pressures from figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

In a stark warning, International Fact-Checking Network Director Angie Drobnic Holan has declared that the fact-checking profession is in a state of crisis. This comes after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the termination of the company’s fact-checking system across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, earlier in 2025. Holan, in an op-ed for Poynter marking International Fact-Checking Day, highlighted the severe impact of this decision on the fact-checking community and society at large.

Holan pointed out that the cessation of Meta’s fact-checking efforts was a significant blow to the profession, which is already under strain from political forces wishing to see it diminished. She emphasized the real-world consequences of disinformation, which fact-checking aims to combat. Additionally, Holan criticized efforts by President Donald Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency to cut funding to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which had previously supported fact-checking initiatives globally.

The director also mentioned the role of Elon Musk in this scenario, noting that public funding, which Musk has criticized, was crucial for the growth of fact-checking. Holan recalled a conversation with an international development officer who believed that fact-checking fosters fact-based public debate, thereby contributing to stable societies.

Despite these challenges, Holan called on fact-checkers to continue their ’truth-seeking’ efforts, underscoring the importance of maintaining an evidence-based record against political pressures. She concluded with a rallying cry for those who value truth to fight for a society that respects it, amidst a backdrop of liberal commentators criticizing Meta’s decision as a dangerous capitulation to political influences.
