The arrests are part of Operation Sombra De La Bestia, a multi-agency effort targeting MS-13 gang activities, and are related to a series of cold-case investigations into murders committed in 2014 and 2015 in and around Broward County. One particularly gruesome case involved a victim who was stabbed over 100 times before being shot in the head. Bondi emphasized the organized and terrorist nature of these gangs, stating, “They are living among us because they think they can get away with this, and they cannot.”

Bondi also hinted at the possibility of seeking the death penalty for the suspects and warned other gang members to consider self-deportation as law enforcement continues their crackdown.
