Trump Praises Musk's Role at DOGE, Hints at Extended Stay
President Donald Trump expressed his desire for Elon Musk to remain in his position at DOGE ‘as long as possible,’ amid reports of Musk’s potential departure.
During a conversation with reporters on Air Force One, President Trump lauded Elon Musk’s contributions to DOGE, a special government initiative. Trump’s comments came in response to inquiries about how long Musk would continue in his role as a ‘special government employee,’ a position that allows for a maximum of 130 days of service within a year. Despite reports suggesting internal frustrations and Musk’s possible exit, Trump emphasized his admiration for Musk, calling him ‘fantastic’ and a ‘patriot.’
Trump hinted at the possibility of extending Musk’s tenure, suggesting that he could be appointed to a different role to keep him involved longer. ‘I would. I think Elon’s great,’ Trump stated, acknowledging Musk’s responsibilities with his companies but expressing a clear preference for his continued involvement in government work. The President also mentioned that upon Musk’s departure, the work at DOGE would be handed over to cabinet secretaries.
Musk’s role at DOGE, which began after an executive order by Trump, has been significant, with the President noting that DOGE uncovered something ‘horrible’ and ‘incredible,’ though he did not elaborate on the details. As Musk’s current term approaches its end date of May 30, Trump’s comments suggest a strong desire to retain Musk’s expertise and leadership within the administration for as long as possible.
