FBI Director Kash Patel Celebrates as Alex Ovechkin Ties Gretzky's NHL Goal Record
FBI Director Kash Patel joined hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to witness Alex Ovechkin tie the NHL’s all-time goal scoring record at Capital One Arena.
In a historic moment for the National Hockey League, Washington Capitals’ star Alex Ovechkin scored his 894th career goal, tying Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record. The milestone was achieved during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks, which the Capitals won 5-3. The goal, scored on a power play in the early minutes of the third period, sparked celebrations both on the ice and in the stands.
Among the spectators was FBI Director Kash Patel, who was seated next to Gretzky and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. Patel, visibly excited, later took to social media to congratulate both Gretzky and Ovechkin, sharing a photo of himself shaking hands with Ovechkin in the locker room. “The greatest game on earth, honored to be with them on this record tying night… 894 goals #Legends @NHL,” Patel posted.
Ovechkin, now just one goal away from surpassing Gretzky, had the chance to break the record during the game but chose not to score into an empty net, preferring to achieve the feat against a goaltender. Capitals’ head coach Spencer Carbery praised Ovechkin’s decision, noting his desire to break the record in a more traditional manner. Ovechkin’s next opportunity to set a new record will be against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.
