Trump's DOGE Initiative Cuts Millions in DEI Funding from Libraries and Museums

The Trump administration has slashed $15 million in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as part of its Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.

In a significant move aligned with President Donald Trump’s executive orders, the administration is cutting funding aimed at promoting DEI in cultural institutions across several states. The cuts include $6.7 million previously allocated to the California State Library for enhancing equitable library programs, and $4 million to the Washington State Library for diverse staff development and support for incarcerated individuals. Additionally, a $1.5 million grant to the Connecticut State Library for integrating social justice and DEI into daily operations, and smaller grants for research and historical initiatives in New York and Ohio, are also being eliminated.

Acting IMLS Director Keith Sonderling emphasized that these actions align with the President’s vision to end taxpayer funding for what he describes as ‘discriminatory DEI initiatives.’ He stated, ‘Our cultural institutions should bring Americans together—not promote divisive ideologies.’ This move is part of a broader effort under the DOGE initiative, which has reportedly saved taxpayers $140 billion by reducing federal bureaucracy and cutting wasteful spending.

The decision comes amidst ongoing debates about the role of federal funding in cultural institutions, with a recent study indicating that federal funds constitute only a small fraction of public libraries’ total revenue. Critics argue that such cuts could hinder efforts to promote inclusivity and equity in communities, while supporters believe it reallocates resources more effectively in line with national priorities.
