Trump Announces Direct Talks with Iran Amid Nuclear Concerns

President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will engage directly with Iran in a high-level meeting scheduled for this Saturday.

During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office, President Trump revealed plans for a significant diplomatic engagement with Iran. This upcoming meeting marks the first direct interaction between the U.S. and Iran since the Trump administration withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018. Trump emphasized the importance of the talks, stating, “We have a very big meeting on Saturday, and we’re dealing with them directly.” The president expressed a preference for a diplomatic solution over military action, referencing his previous threats to bomb Iran if it did not enter negotiations to end its nuclear program. Trump warned of the dangerous territory the situation is entering and expressed hope for successful talks. The specifics of the meeting’s location and format remain undisclosed, but Trump assured that the approach would be different and stronger than the JCPOA. Amidst rising tensions, the U.N. nuclear watchdog recently reported that Iran has enough near-weapons-grade enriched uranium to potentially build five nuclear weapons. Netanyahu, aligning with U.S. goals, stressed the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, ideally through diplomacy as was done with Libya.
