DOGE Slashes $51M in Grants for African Development Projects

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has cut $51 million in funding from the U.S. African Development Foundation, targeting projects like shea butter marketing and mango drying facilities.

In a move to streamline federal spending, DOGE announced significant cuts to various initiatives funded by the U.S. African Development Foundation. Among the projects affected, $229,296 was previously allocated for marketing 100% organic shea butter in Burkina Faso, while $246,217 supported mango drying facilities in the Ivory Coast. Additionally, $239,738 was used for marketing pineapple juice in Benin. Other initiatives that faced cuts include $99,566 for increasing yogurt production in Uganda, $84,059 for a business incubator in Nigeria, $50,000 for dragon fruit farming training in Senegal, and $48,406 for a WhatsApp marketing chatbot in Kenya.

DOGE, a temporary organization within the White House established by President Donald Trump, aims to optimize government operations and reduce expenditure. Led by Elon Musk, the department has been tasked with achieving these goals within 18 months. Recent actions by DOGE have included the termination of 113 contracts worth $4.7 billion, such as a USDA consulting contract for Peru’s climate change activities.

The department’s efforts extend beyond Africa, with cuts also affecting programs like gender equity in Mexico and worker empowerment in South America. DOGE’s broader strategy involves canceling diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as addressing inefficiencies in federal buildings and programs. As of the latest update, DOGE claims to have saved Americans $140 billion, equating to approximately $870 per taxpayer.
