House GOP Struggles to Unite on Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill'

House Republicans face internal division as they approach a crucial vote on President Trump’s comprehensive legislative package.

House Republicans are grappling with internal divisions as they prepare for a significant vote on Wednesday on what President Donald Trump has termed his ‘big, beautiful bill.’ This legislative package aims to advance Trump’s priorities in defense, border security, energy, and taxes. Despite Trump’s history of swaying votes, skepticism remains high among some GOP members about the Senate’s amended version of the bill, which proposes significantly lower spending cuts than the House’s original proposal.

The House version, passed in late February, demanded between $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion in federal spending cuts to fund Trump’s initiatives. In contrast, the Senate amended this to a mere $4 billion, causing uproar among fiscal conservatives within the party. Key figures like House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris have expressed doubts about the bill’s passage, even after a meeting with Trump at the White House.

Several Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Tim Burchett, Ralph Norman, and Keith Self, were notably absent from the White House meeting, signaling deep reservations about the Senate’s version. These holdouts and others argue that the amended bill does not align with their fiscal conservative values, with some like Rep. Eric Burlison describing the Senate’s proposal as ‘financially immoral.’

Speaker Mike Johnson has defended the Senate’s amendment, emphasizing that it is a necessary step in the budget reconciliation process, which could eventually lead to more conservative legislation. However, critics within the party are pushing for immediate action on a more conservative reconciliation bill from the House.

As the vote looms, the outcome remains uncertain, with Trump publicly urging the House to pass the Senate’s version to move forward with his legislative agenda. The situation underscores the challenges within the GOP to maintain unity and push through Trump’s ambitious legislative plans.
