Supreme Court Ruling Halts Federal Judge's Review of Trump's Deportation Policy

A federal judge canceled a planned court hearing to review President Donald Trump’s use of a 1798 wartime law for deportations after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the administration.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg had scheduled a hearing to evaluate the Trump administration’s application of the Alien Enemies Act, a law from 1798, to deport Venezuelan nationals, including alleged gang members. However, following a 5-4 Supreme Court decision supporting Trump, Boasberg vacated the hearing. The Supreme Court’s ruling specified that the appropriate venue for such deportation cases is the Southern District of Texas, where the affected migrants are detained. The decision also reinforced due process rights, ensuring that those subject to deportation under the Act must receive proper notice and the opportunity for judicial review. This ruling came after an emergency restraining order granted by Boasberg had temporarily blocked the deportations, a move upheld by a federal appeals court. The Supreme Court’s decision marked a significant victory for the Trump administration, which had faced legal challenges over its immigration policies.
