Army Secretary Dan Driscoll Appointed Acting Director of ATF

U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has been appointed as the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), replacing FBI Director Kash Patel.

U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll was recently appointed to serve as the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), taking over from FBI Director Kash Patel. The appointment was announced while Driscoll was traveling in Europe, and he will continue to serve in his role as Army secretary concurrently. This move comes as Patel shifts his focus back to his primary role at the FBI, a position he assumed after a contentious confirmation process.

Driscoll, a North Carolina native and Army veteran, brings a wealth of experience to the ATF. He previously served as a cavalry scout platoon leader with the 10th Mountain Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom and has since worked as a venture capitalist. His appointment to the Army secretary position was confirmed earlier this year, and he currently serves as a senior advisor to Vice President JD Vance.

The ATF, which has been a focal point for congressional Republicans, is responsible for enforcing federal laws related to firearms, explosives, and arson. The agency also licenses federal firearms dealers, traces guns used in crimes, and analyzes intelligence in shooting investigations. President Donald Trump has yet to outline his long-term plans for the ATF, leaving the future direction of the agency uncertain.

Kash Patel’s tenure at the ATF was brief, as he was appointed to the role in February following his confirmation as FBI director. Sources close to Patel indicated that his appointment to the ATF was always intended to be temporary, allowing him to focus on his primary responsibilities at the FBI.
