Trump Clashes with 'Rebel' Republicans Over Tariff Powers

President Donald Trump criticized Republican lawmakers for attempting to curb his authority on tariffs during a speech at the National Republican Congressional Committee.

In a fiery address to the National Republican Congressional Committee, President Donald Trump lambasted certain Republican members of Congress for their efforts to limit his presidential powers on tariffs. Trump, speaking at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., specifically targeted what he called ‘rebel’ Republicans who are pushing for Congress to take over tariff negotiations.

Trump’s comments come in response to a bipartisan bill led by Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., aimed at blocking the president’s ability to impose tariffs without congressional approval. Additionally, in the Senate, a group led by Senators Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., is working on a resolution to repeal Trump’s global tariffs. Another bill introduced by Senators Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., seeks to mandate that the president notify Congress within 48 hours of imposing new tariffs and require congressional approval within 60 days.

Trump mocked the idea of Congress taking over tariff negotiations, suggesting it would make China ’the happiest people in the world.’ He argued that such moves would undermine his negotiation stance and benefit China at the expense of the U.S. The president emphasized the need for unity within the Republican party to defend American workers from what he described as unfair trade practices.
