Trump Backs Bill to Expand Concealed Carry Rights Across State Lines

President Donald Trump has voiced support for a Republican-led bill that would allow concealed carry permit holders to legally carry firearms across state lines, emphasizing the protection of Second Amendment rights.

House Republicans, led by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), are pushing forward with the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, a piece of legislation that would mandate states to recognize concealed carry permits issued by other states, similar to how driver’s licenses are recognized across state lines. This move, which has garnered support from dozens of Republican lawmakers and one Democrat, aims to prevent law-abiding gun owners from inadvertently breaking the law when traveling across state borders.

“When law-abiding citizens are traveling, they shouldn’t be turned into criminals because they cross the state line,” Hudson emphasized during a recent discussion on ‘America Reports’. The bill, which President Trump has promised to sign, underscores his commitment to Second Amendment rights, stating, “Your Second Amendment does not end at the state line,” in a 2024 campaign video.

Despite passing the House in 2017, the bill stalled in the Senate. However, with renewed efforts and support from Senate Majority Leader John Thune, there is optimism about its passage this time around. Yet, the legislation faces strong opposition from gun safety advocates and some state officials who argue that it would undermine states’ rights to establish their own gun laws. Critics, including the gun safety group Everytown for Gun Safety, contend that the bill would override stricter state laws, potentially allowing individuals from states with laxer regulations to carry concealed weapons in states with more stringent requirements.

The debate over this bill highlights the ongoing tension between federal and state gun laws, as well as the broader discussion on Second Amendment rights and public safety.
