DOJ Sues Maine Over Trans Athletes in Girls' Sports, Citing Title IX Violations

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Maine for defying President Trump’s executive order banning biological males from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.

In a significant legal move, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced a lawsuit against the state of Maine for its refusal to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at excluding transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports. This action, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate over transgender participation in sports and the enforcement of Title IX.

The lawsuit was unveiled during a press conference where Bondi was joined by conservative activist Riley Gaines and fencer Stephanie Turner, who has been vocal about her opposition to transgender inclusion in women’s sports. Bondi emphasized the DOJ’s commitment to combating discrimination against women in sports, stating, “The Department of Justice will not sit by when women are discriminated against in sports.”

The legal action seeks an injunction and aims to restore titles to female athletes who competed against transgender athletes. This move comes after a series of federal pressures on Maine, including investigations into its educational institutions and funding cuts from the USDA, which were temporarily halted by a federal judge.

The conflict has escalated following a heated exchange between President Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills, where Trump warned of legal action. Maine’s Democratic leadership, including Mills and Attorney General Aaron Frey, have yet to respond to the lawsuit, but the state has previously filed its own lawsuit against the Trump administration over the USDA funding cuts.

Republican opposition within Maine, led by figures like State Rep. Laurel Libby, has been vocal in supporting the DOJ’s intervention. Libby criticized the state’s Democratic leadership for prioritizing “woke ideology over biological reality,” and expressed relief at the federal government’s legal action.

The controversy has also seen local action, with the MSAD #70 School Board voting to comply with Title IX by preventing transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports. This decision reflects a broader national debate, with activists like Nicole Neily of Defending Education and Alleigh Marré of the American Parents Coalition praising the Trump administration’s stance as a defense of student safety and fair competition.

As the legal battle unfolds, the implications for transgender rights and sports policy continue to be a focal point of national discussion, highlighting the complex interplay between federal law, state autonomy, and individual rights.
