Texas Legislature Passes Bill to Establish DOGE-Inspired Efficiency Office

The Texas Legislature has passed Senate Bill 14, inspired by Elon Musk’s DOGE, aiming to streamline state regulations and enhance government efficiency.

In a move inspired by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Texas Legislature has passed Senate Bill 14 (S.B. 14), which is now headed to Governor Greg Abbott’s desk for approval. The bill seeks to establish a new Texas Regulatory Office within the governor’s office, designed to cut red tape and eliminate unnecessary regulations across state agencies. An advisory panel, comprising business owners, researchers, state agencies, and members of the public, will assist in this endeavor, ensuring a broad-based approach to regulatory reform.

The legislation, authored by Weatherford Republican Phil King, aims to make regulations more cost-effective and transparent. It mandates that state agencies write rules in plain language, reduce paperwork and fees, and provide clear cost-benefit analyses for new rules. Additionally, S.B. 14 enhances the power of courts to challenge agency interpretations of laws, shifting some legal authority away from the agencies themselves.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, a supporter of the bill, emphasized its potential to save taxpayers money and boost the Texas economy. He stated, “The Texas Miracle will continue long into the 21st century because our common-sense, conservative approach to regulation will keep Texans prosperous and our economy strong.” The bill also requires the development of an interactive website to help the public easily access regulatory information.

While Governor Abbott has yet to publicly comment on whether he will sign the bill into law, the passage of S.B. 14 marks a significant step towards implementing a state-level version of the efficiency-focused initiatives pioneered by DOGE at the federal level.
