Trump Threatens to Abandon Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Russian Delays
President Donald Trump has warned that the U.S. will withdraw from peace efforts in Ukraine if Russia continues to stall ceasefire negotiations.
President Donald Trump expressed frustration over the ongoing delays in ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking to reporters, Trump stated, “If for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say ‘you’re foolish, you’re fools, you’re horrible people,’ and we’re going to just take a pass.” This statement follows Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s earlier comments in Paris, where he met with European leaders and indicated that the U.S. is prepared to move on if no progress is made soon.
Rubio, after what he described as ‘very positive’ talks, emphasized that the U.S. would not continue to engage in fruitless meetings. “We’re not going to continue to fly all over the world and do meeting after meeting after meeting if no progress is being made,” he asserted. Despite Ukraine’s readiness to agree to ceasefire terms, Russia’s hesitance has prolonged the conflict.
Trump also hinted at potential economic repercussions for Russia, referencing previous threats to impose tariffs on Russian oil if the country does not cooperate. “If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine… I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia,” he warned during a recent interview.
The situation remains tense as the international community watches closely, hoping for a swift resolution to the conflict that has caused significant loss and displacement in Ukraine.
