Daryl Hannah Claims Trump Administration Targeted Neil Young's Citizenship

Actress Daryl Hannah alleges that the Trump administration attempted to obstruct her husband, Neil Young, from obtaining U.S. citizenship.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Daryl Hannah revealed the challenges her husband, singer-songwriter Neil Young, faced in his journey to U.S. citizenship under the Trump administration. Hannah stated that the administration employed various tactics to delay Young’s citizenship process, forcing him to undergo repeated interviews. “They tried every trick in the book to mess him up,” Hannah claimed, highlighting the absurdity of the situation given Young’s long-term residence and tax contributions in the U.S. since his twenties.

Neil Young, originally from Toronto, Canada, and a long-time resident of the U.S., officially became a citizen in January 2020. His path to citizenship was fraught with delays, which Young attributed to his marijuana use, a factor that led to additional scrutiny and testing. Despite these hurdles, Young expressed relief and happiness upon finally achieving citizenship, as shared on his Instagram.

Hannah expressed concerns about Young’s ability to return to the U.S. after international tours, fearing potential repercussions due to his public criticism of former President Donald Trump. She noted, however, that as an American citizen, Young should be safe from being barred from re-entry, unlike those with green cards or visas who have faced detention.

This situation underscores the broader tensions and policies during Trump’s presidency, particularly regarding immigration and citizenship processes. The allegations made by Hannah add a personal narrative to the many stories of individuals navigating the U.S. immigration system during that time.
