FBI Urged to Tackle Gangs in AOC's 'Red Light' District

Residents and local leaders in Queens have called on FBI Director Kash Patel to address the escalating gang activities and illegal operations in Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district.

In a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, more than two dozen local leaders and former officials expressed their concerns over the persistent gang activities along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, New York. The area, dubbed a ‘Red Light’ district, has reportedly been taken over by the 18th Street Gang, leading to increased instances of prostitution and drug dealing. The letter highlights the failure of previous police operations, like ‘Operation Restore Roosevelt’, to provide a lasting solution to the issue. Despite a significant police crackdown that resulted in over 1,800 arrests and a reported 37% drop in crime, locals claim that the gangs quickly regained control, turning bars into brothels and continuing their illegal operations unabated. The community leaders emphasized the need for federal intervention to dismantle what they describe as a ‘well-oiled criminal machine’. Amidst these allegations, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been criticized for her lack of response to the situation, with a scheduled town hall in the neighborhood anticipated to address these pressing issues. Representative Grace Meng, whose district also includes the area, expressed confidence in ongoing NYPD efforts but stressed the need for continued federal support.
