Vice President JD Vance Meets Pope Francis on Easter Sunday

Vice President JD Vance met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Easter Sunday, amidst the Pope’s ongoing recovery from pneumonia.

On Easter Sunday, Vice President JD Vance had a brief meeting with Pope Francis at the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican. Despite his recovery from a severe case of pneumonia, the 88-year-old pontiff welcomed Vance, who expressed relief at seeing the Pope in better health. The meeting, lasting 17 minutes, included a cordial exchange where Pope Francis gifted Vance three chocolate Easter eggs for his children, a Vatican tie, and rosaries.

The discussion between the two leaders touched on their shared commitment to religious freedom and conscience, as well as international issues, particularly focusing on countries facing war, political tensions, and humanitarian crises. The plight of migrants, refugees, and prisoners was also a significant part of their conversation, reflecting Pope Francis’s longstanding advocacy for these groups.

Following the meeting, Vance joined his family for Easter Mass at St. Paul Outside the Walls, visiting the tomb of the apostle St. Paul. Earlier in the weekend, Vance had also met with Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, indicating a busy schedule of diplomatic engagements during his visit to Rome.
