Fort McCoy Commander Suspended Amid Missing Portraits Controversy

The U.S. Army suspended the commander of Fort McCoy following the discovery of missing portraits of key government figures on the base’s chain of command wall.

Col. Sheyla Baez Ramirez, the garrison commander of Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, was suspended after the base failed to display photos of President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on a wall meant to showcase their chain of command. The U.S. Army Reserve Command emphasized that the suspension was unrelated to misconduct, stating, “We have no further details to provide at this time while this matter is under review.”

The issue came to light after a report by The New York Times and was further highlighted by Defense Secretary Hegseth’s social media activity. A subsequent Defense Department announcement revealed an ongoing investigation into the missing portraits, which were later replaced as confirmed by an official post on social media stating, “Regarding the Ft. McCoy Chain of Command wall controversy…. WE FIXED IT! Also, an investigation has begun to figure out exactly what happened.”

This incident is part of a broader series of leadership changes within the U.S. military, including the recent dismissal of the commander at Pituffik Space Force Base in Greenland, following remarks that were perceived to undermine Vice President Vance. These shifts underscore ongoing tensions and the high standards of conduct expected within military leadership, particularly in maintaining nonpartisanship.
