Trump Administration Halts Biden's $5 Billion Green Energy Project Over Faulty Science
The Trump administration has halted a $5 billion green energy project initiated by the Biden administration, citing rushed and faulty science that could harm the environment.
The Empire Wind Project, a $5 billion initiative to construct 147 ocean wind turbines off the coasts of New York and New Jersey, was abruptly halted by the Trump Department of the Interior. The decision came after a study revealed that the project, developed by energy company Equinor, relied on inadequate scientific and environmental analysis during its approval process.
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum announced the halt, stating that further review was necessary due to concerns that the Biden administration had rushed the project’s approval without sufficient analysis. A review by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) supported these concerns, highlighting that the project’s monitoring plans for assessing impacts on fisheries and habitat resources were deficient.
The NOAA’s findings indicated that the project could severely impact sensitive habitats, spawning grounds, and important fishing areas. Approximately 139 acres of seabed were at risk of permanent alteration, with an additional 1,554 acres affected by a submarine cable installation.
Despite these environmental concerns, New York Governor Kathy Hochul criticized the decision to halt the project, emphasizing the economic implications, including the loss of jobs and affordable energy. Equinor, complying with the halt order, is exploring legal options, including an appeal.
The Trump administration’s move reflects a broader critique of green energy initiatives, with some Republicans advocating to end taxpayer funding for what they describe as ‘green energy boondoggles’.
