Rubio Overhauls State Department, Closes 132 Offices Globally

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced a significant reorganization of the State Department, closing over 130 offices worldwide to streamline operations and align with the administration’s foreign policy.

In a move to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of U.S. diplomatic efforts, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has initiated a major overhaul of the State Department. The reorganization includes the closure of 132 offices around the globe, reducing the total number of agency offices from 734 to 602. Rubio stated that the decision aims to streamline operations and align the department more closely with the administration’s America First foreign policy objectives.

The closures target offices that Rubio described as redundant or misaligned with America’s core national interests, including those involved in human rights and democracy promotion. Rubio criticized these offices for being platforms for activists and left-wing agendas, which he believes do not serve the interests of the American people or the administration’s goals.

Among the notable closures is the Global Engagement Center (GEC), which Rubio shut down last week. He accused the GEC of engaging in censorship, particularly against conservative voices, and highlighted its continued operation under a different name despite a congressional vote to close it.

The reorganization also involves consolidating region-specific functions and reducing diplomatic operations in certain regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa and Canada. Rubio emphasized that the changes are necessary to bring the State Department into the 21st century and to ensure that every bureau and office has a clear mission aligned with national interests.

In addition to the office closures, Rubio has instructed under secretaries to present plans within 30 days to reduce U.S. personnel in their departments by 15%. This move is part of a broader effort to make the State Department more efficient and focused on advancing American safety, security, and prosperity worldwide.
