Schumer's Popularity Plummets in New York Amid Trump Policy Disputes

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s approval ratings have hit a historic low in New York, while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s favorability soars, according to a recent Siena College poll.

In a striking turn of events, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s popularity among New York voters has dipped significantly, as revealed by the latest Siena College poll. The poll, conducted from April 14-16, shows Schumer’s favorable rating at a mere 39%, with an unfavorable rating of 49%, marking his worst performance in Siena’s 20-year history of polling in the state. This downturn is attributed to his support for a Republican-crafted federal funding bill, which was opposed by many Democrats and signed by President Donald Trump.

The poll further indicates a sharp decline in Schumer’s support among Democrats, particularly liberals, dropping from a 68-23% favorable to 52-38%. This backlash highlights a growing discontent among the left wing of the party, who demand a more aggressive stance against Trump’s policies.

In contrast, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive star from New York City, has seen her favorability ratings climb to 47% favorable and 33% unfavorable. This marks a significant increase from her previous figures and showcases her rising influence within the Democratic Party. Notably, 64% of Democrats view Ocasio-Cortez favorably, surpassing the ratings of both Schumer and New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

Governor Hochul herself has experienced a modest uptick in her approval ratings, now standing at 48% approval and 45% disapproval. Her favorable ratings have also improved to 44% favorable and 43% unfavorable. Despite these gains, only 39% of voters express a desire to see her re-elected in 2026, suggesting a mixed reception to her governance.

The Siena poll results come at a time when Schumer faces calls from within his party to adopt a harder line against Trump. While not up for re-election until 2028, there is speculation that Ocasio-Cortez might challenge him in a primary, buoyed by her increasing popularity. As New York’s political landscape continues to evolve, these shifts in public opinion could have far-reaching implications for the Democratic Party’s strategy and leadership.
