Trump Backs Massapequa High School in Fight to Retain 'Chiefs' Nickname

President Donald Trump has voiced his support for Massapequa High School’s battle to keep its ‘Chiefs’ nickname, calling the potential forced change ‘ridiculous’.

In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump expressed his support for Massapequa High School on Long Island, New York, in their ongoing legal battle to maintain their ‘Chiefs’ nickname. The school district is facing a state mandate to remove logos related to indigenous people by the end of the year, a move that has sparked significant local opposition.

Trump’s statement highlighted his agreement with the community’s stance, emphasizing the nickname’s long-standing role in the school’s identity. ‘Forcing them to change the name, after all of these years, is ridiculous and, in actuality, an affront to our great Indian population,’ Trump wrote, urging his Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to intervene on behalf of the school.

The controversy stems from a New York law aimed at eliminating Native American imagery from public schools. Despite a lawsuit filed by the Massapequa school district, a federal judge ruled against them, intensifying the debate over cultural representation and school identity.

Massapequa School Board President Kerry Wachter has been vocal about the issue, stating that changing the name would not benefit the students and would strip them of their identity. The district estimates that rebranding could cost approximately $1 million.

The situation in Massapequa reflects a broader national conversation about the use of Native American names and imagery in sports and education. While some teams like the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians have changed their names in response to public pressure, others, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Florida State Seminoles, have retained theirs amidst ongoing debates.
