RFK Jr. Urges Safe Disposal of Prescription Drugs on National Take Back Day

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasizes the importance of properly disposing prescription medications to prevent environmental contamination and misuse.

On National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, observed on April 26, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. highlighted the critical need for Americans to dispose of their unused or expired prescription medications correctly. In a video message shared on social media, Kennedy warned against the common but harmful practice of flushing drugs down the toilet, stating that this method can lead to the contamination of water systems with pharmaceuticals, including birth control hormones, antibiotics, and chemotherapy agents.

Kennedy’s message aligns with the efforts of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which has established over 4,600 anonymous drop-off sites nationwide for the event. The DEA’s initiative not only aims to clear out unwanted medications but also plays a crucial role in preventing medication misuse and the onset of opioid addiction. During the DEA’s last take back event in October 2024, they successfully collected over 629,953 pounds of medication.

While some medications, such as certain opioids listed on the FDA’s ‘Flush List’ including Vicodin, OxyContin, and Percocet, are deemed safe for flushing, Kennedy and the FDA advise against flushing any drugs not on this list. For those unable to participate on the designated take back day, year-round drug disposal facilities are available, and the FDA provides guidelines on safe disposal methods for medications, as well as needles and syringes.

Kennedy’s advocacy extends beyond drug disposal; he has also been vocal about eliminating artificial food dyes from the nation’s food supply, promising to ensure that children have access to ‘real food’ rather than ‘poison.’ His multifaceted approach to public health underscores his commitment to safeguarding both the environment and public health.
