Trump Plans to Appoint New National Security Advisor Amidst Leadership Shuffle

President Donald Trump announced plans to appoint a new national security advisor within the next six months, amidst a significant reshuffling of his administration’s leadership.

President Trump revealed his intentions to appoint a new national security advisor during a conversation with reporters on Air Force One. This announcement comes on the heels of former advisor Mike Waltz’s transition to the role of ambassador to the United Nations, a move Trump described as an ‘upgrade’ rather than a resignation. Trump emphasized that Waltz did not make any mistakes and expressed confidence in his ability to excel in the new position. The president also addressed recent changes within the National Security Council, noting the departure of several staffers, which he linked to a recent leak involving a Signal chat.

In addition to discussing national security, Trump touched on various other topics during the flight, including potential trade deals and the ongoing issue of Mexican cartels. He hinted at forthcoming trade agreements but remained tight-lipped on specifics, stating his preference for setting the terms himself. Regarding the cartels, Trump revealed he had offered U.S. military assistance to Mexico to combat them, an offer that was declined by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, whom Trump suggested was intimidated by the cartels.

As the administration continues to navigate these changes, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been serving as the interim national security advisor. Trump mentioned that there are many interested candidates for the permanent position, including White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, whom he praised highly but did not confirm as a contender for the role. The president’s comments reflect ongoing adjustments within his administration as he approaches the next phase of his term.
