Columbia University Cuts 180 Jobs After Losing Federal Grants Over Antisemitism

Columbia University announced the termination of around 180 staff members following the revocation of $400 million in federal grants by the Trump administration due to the university’s failure to address antisemitic harassment.

Columbia University, facing financial strain after the Trump administration canceled $400 million in federal grants, has laid off approximately 180 staff members. The decision comes after the university was criticized for not protecting Jewish students from antisemitic harassment. Acting President Claire Shipman stated that the layoffs represent about 20% of the workforce supported by the now-terminated grants. She emphasized the necessity of these actions to maintain financial flexibility and invest in forward-driving areas amidst challenges in higher education. The federal grants were canceled in early March by multiple agencies including the Department of Justice and the Department of Education, citing Columbia’s inaction against persistent antisemitic harassment. In response to the funding cut, Columbia agreed to several demands from the Trump administration, including banning masks used to conceal identity and empowering campus police. Despite ongoing discussions with the federal government to resume funding, the university continues to face budget constraints and uncertainties about future federal research funding.
